ULIS has confirmed that Malta’s National Lottery has joined its global membership network as a full member.

Licensed in 2022 to operate the country’s national lottery, the company has emphasised integrity and responsible play in its operations.

It has also pledged to support sustainable lottery activity that contributes to both the economy and local communities. These priorities aim to reflect the wider ULIS mission of protecting sport and promoting fair competition worldwide.

Schembri on joining the network

Johann Schembri, CEO of National Lottery PLC, asserted that the move represents a “significant step forward” in the company’s commitment to transparency and fair play, not just in Malta but across global platforms.

“Being part of ULIS emphasises our dedication to integrity and responsible gaming, and we are eager to contribute actively to the ULIS international network of members and partners,” the CEO added.

The new membership will see National Lottery PLC and ULIS work together on monitoring programmes, education and initiatives designed to strengthen international cooperation on integrity.

Context from ULIS leadership

The announcement follows comments made last month by ULIS President Gilles Maillet in an interview with the World Lottery Association (WLA).

Maillet said the organisation is built on the foundation of state-licensed lotteries, with a focus on protecting sport and redistributing funds to communities through good causes.

“We deliver a unique monitoring service, but we do not only work on market monitoring. Our mission is also to promote international cooperation for sports integrity and to contribute to the education of international stakeholders.

“ULIS stands out for its non-commercial approach to sports integrity, rooted in public interest, ethics, and collaboration.”

Maillet, appointed in 2023, is now in the final year of his presidency. His tenure has focused on reinforcing international cooperation and highlighting the role lotteries can play in upholding sporting integrity.
