Lotto.com has expanded its reach in the US by launching in Maine, its first state launch of 2025 following three successful launches last year.

This brings the total number of states where the lottery courier app is active to 11, the remaining 10 being Arizona, Arkansas, Colorado. Massachusetts, Minnesota, Nebraska, New Jersey, New York, Ohio and Oregon.

The development shows continued momentum for lottery couriers after a difficult couple of months, particularly in Texas, where the apps have been facing political pressure – albeit along with the rest of the Texas Lottery ecosystem.

Regarding its launch in Maine, Lotto.com expects strong returns from the state due to the lottery’s well-established position in the state. The Maine State Lottery has been operating since 1974, and has contributed over $1.24bn to state programmes in the decades since.

“Expanding into Maine, home to one of the country’s earliest state lotteries, is an exciting milestone for our team,” said Thomas Metzger, CEO of Lotto.com Inc.

“We look forward to bringing new players and incremental sales to the Maine Lottery and continuing to grow our incredible community of over three million customers!”

Lottery couriers have become an important and defining feature of the US lottery system over the past few years, particularly due to their services filling a gap left in many states where lotteries do not have a digital offering.

Increasingly though, many state lotteries are beginning to get involved in digital activities and enabling online ticket sales. This does raise the question as to whether couriers will continue to fill a role, though stakeholders like Metzger expect the two to continue working in tandem over the coming years.

Speaking at the SBC Summit Americas back in May, Metzger shared his belief that consumers are more than willing to pay for convenience in today’s increasingly digitally native age.
