Danske Spil, Denmark’s state lottery, has proved that state-owned gambling is still highly regarded among Danes.
The company’s GGR for Q1 2025 went up 2.5% YoY compared to the same period last year, with total GGR standing at DKK 1.3bn (£149m) – an increase of DKK 32m when pitted against Q1’24 (DKK 1.2bn).
Results were spearheaded by growth across all of Danske Spil’s flagship lottery brands – Danske Lotteri Spil, Danske Licens Spil, and Det Danske Klasselotteri.
GGR from Danske Licens Spil stood at DKK 396m (Q1’24: DKK 393m), a DKK 3m difference driven by good performance across sports games and iGaming.
Det Danske Klasselotteri, Denmark’s oldest lottery founded in 1753, recorded a total of DKK 75m in GGR (Q1’24: DKK 64m). The update of its “15 is magic” game back in Q4 2024 contributed to that performance.
Elite Gaming, which is Danske Spil’s retail slots brand, was slightly down compared to the previous corresponding period, standing at DKK 71m (Q1’24: DKK 75m).
Total profit after tax was DKK 500m, or DKK 10m lower than the first three months last year. The difference comes as a result of the sale of Swush, a real-time fantasy sports company, which was completed in the first quarter of 2024.
While at that time the transaction brought an additional DKK 27m to Danske Spil, it constituted a decrease in financial items in Q1’25.
The results show that lotteries retain high popularity among Denmark’s population, also reflected in Danske Spil’s numbers for the full 2024.
A report by the country’s regulator, Spillemyndigheden, highlighted that customer spend had increased in 2024 compared to 2023, going up from DKK 724 to DKK 770 respectively.
In its latest financial summary, Danske Spil reiterated that parallel to its GGR growth, it remains fully committed to promoting healthy gambling habits and facilitating responsible gambling within its customer base.
