The Kenyan government has taken another major step forward towards securing an operator for its National Lottery.
This has been an objective for the Kenyan government and its National Lottery Board (NLB) for much of 2026, with a tender process launched in 2026.
In its latest move, the NLB has appointed RSM Eastern Africa as its ‘transaction advisor’ to help guide the procurement process. RSM is an international financial audit company, with its Eastern Africa division headquartered in the Kenyan capital of Nairobi.
The company will conduct its advisory duties in partnership with Qlot Consulting, a Swedish company which specialises in lottery and gaming consultancy work.
“The appointment of a credible, multidisciplinary Transaction Advisor is a defining step in building a National Lottery that Kenyans can trust,” said Dr. Farida Karoney EGH, Chairperson of the National Lottery Board.
“It is a statement of intent — that our National Lottery will be structured transparently, governed responsibly, and built to international best practice, with every shilling raised channelled toward good causes that uplift communities across the country.”
The Kenyan government is keen to secure an operator for its National Lottery as soon as possible for much the same reason any other government wants to run a national lottery – returns to public causes.
After prizes and costs are deducted, Kenyan National Lottery revenue proceeds are directed into the National Lottery Fund. The fund is used to support several key areas:
- Charitable and humanitarian work
- Economic empowerment for young people and women
- Sports, the arts and creative economy
- National heritage
- Health and education
- Emergency response
- Transformative national projects
The NLB wants to find an operator that will manage the Kenyan lottery with these objectives in mind, while also taking responsible gaming very seriously as a key design of the National Lottery product.
These include age verification, play and spend controls, self-exclusion, disciplined advertising, and a clear disclosure of odds to customers.
