The European Lotteries (EL) has named Piet Van Baeveghem as the organisation’s new Secretary General, effective 1 July.

The appointment by the EL Executive Committee has been described as a key step for the association’s future. Baeveghem is currently the Secretary General, Legal and Regulatory Affairs Management at the Belgium National Lottery.

The EL said in a statement: “As a long-time colleague from The National Lottery in Belgium, Piet has been deeply engaged with EL for many years – most notably as Executive Chair of the EL Legal & Regulatory Working Group, but also in various other capacities.”

He brings more than 25 years experience in policy-making and stakeholder engagement, making him a valuable addition to the EL team.

“His extensive experience and deep understanding of the lottery sector make him well-prepared for this role,” the statement added.

The group also highlighted that the move looks to ensure that both the EL team and its membership ranks continue to grow and strengthen their ‘unique societal mission’.

In terms of education, Piet completed a Master’s in Law at Ghent University and is a ‘recognised leader’ in strategy, governance and regulatory affairs.

Meanwhile, in recent weeks the EL released a new sustainability report, which further underpinned its continuous commitment to improving societies.

The paper included 2023 financial monitoring data from all EL members, with a total of €22bn going to good causes and societal initiatives, such as sport, health, education and cultural heritage projects.
