Allwyn UK has revealed that it will be offering The National Lottery at all Aldi self-checkouts in the UK.

The latest move, described as a ‘key upgrade’ to the lottery’s retail system, will see Aldi become amongst the first to launch the new draw games purchases through the widely known self-checkout monitors.

It was on 1 February 2024 that Allwyn UK took over as the operator of The National Lottery, and the latest move has been described as a ‘massive effort’ from both teams.

Although the store has sold National Lottery tickets since 2021, the new upgrade means that touchscreen purchases will be available for games such as Lucky Dip, EuroMillions, Thunderball and Set For Life.

Operations Director at Allwyn, Jenny Blogg, commented: “As we continue on our retail transformation journey – adapting our offering for a changing retail landscape and new-look stores – we’re delighted to be expanding our partnership with Aldi.

“This will ultimately make The National Lottery available at every single touchpoint in Aldi’s customer journey, helping us to reach even more players. So, however, Aldi customers choose to shop – whether at the main tills or via self-checkout – they’ll always have the option to pick up a National Lottery game.”

Furthermore, Allwyn will now begin its upgrade to Aldi self-checkout touchscreens – which will be operating at over 1,050 stores in the country.

Before shoppers complete their purchase, the new consumer-led functionality will require user age verification checks to be carried out by an Aldi worker for safety purposes.

Notably, supported by systems partner Scientific Games, last month Allwyn tested a new retail environment for its upcoming SCiQ retail system at the ASDA store in Ashton-under-Lyne, Manchester. The trial, which was in a live environment, debuted a new ‘high-tech’ and ‘ID-proof’ dispenser for scratchcards.

Following on from this, Richard Thornton, Communications Director at Aldi, detailed how the chain is ‘always looking for ways to improve the shopping experience for its customers’.

He added: “This is why we’ve made it even easier to enter The National Lottery while picking up essentials at our self-checkouts.

“As the UK’s cheapest supermarket, our shoppers know they’ll always find amazing value at Aldi, but we hope some lucky customers manage to find the winning numbers at our self-checkouts too.”
