Performance of lotteries across Sweden in 2024 has proven commendable, the Swedish gambling regulator Spelinspektionen reported.

The latest financial report from the authority showed that total 2024 turnover generated from state lotteries and slot machine games was SEK 6bn (£446k), which was a 2% YoY increase. This was followed by total lotteries turnover standing at SEK 4bn.

Out of the full licensed gambling market turnover (SEK 27.8bn), commercial online gaming and betting had the biggest share, with SEK 18bn for the whole 2024 (up 5% YoY).

Finding itself on the opposite side of the table, furthest down was the turnout derived from state-owned casino gaming (SEK 160m), primarily driven by Casino Cosmopol.

The casino is property of the state operator Svenska Spel, but has faced significant challenges in recent years.

Shifting consumer trends and advances in digital technology have drastically reduced Casino Cosmopol’s operational efficiency, leading to a 11.4% turnover drop in FY2023.

Between April 2020 and June 2021, Casino Cosmopol generated zero turnover as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Out of the four venues across Sweden, the only physical location that remains open is the one in Stockholm.
