The executive of Saxony Anhalt has launched the official website for German gambling’s federal regulator, Gemeinsamen Glücksspielbehörde der Länder (GGL).
GGL has not yet finalised its senior management, workforce or administrative structures governing German gambling under the terms of the Fourth Interstate Gambling Treaty (GlüNeuRStv), therefore it is expected that the regulatory agency will be fully operational by 1 January 2023.
In 2020, Germany’s Bundestag (Federal Assembly) granted Saxony Anhalt the right to be the centre for German gambling’s new federal supervisory unit deemed as an integral remit for the launch of the GlüNeuRStv regime.
Taking charge of the project, Saxony Anhalt appointed Bundestag representative Annie Poggemann to serve as the province’s first gambling minister charged with establishing the GGL’s foundations.
German gambling’s federal regulator will be headquartered in the City of Halle, located in the South of Saxony Anhalt.
On its website, GGL disclosed that it would soon publish ‘50 new job advertisements’ on its careers page, as ‘110 staff are required to launch the agency on 1 January 2023’.
Taking on all regulatory disciplines of German gambling, the GGL will be led by Ronald Benter and Benjamin Schwanke as joint Chief Executives.
When fully operational, GGL will be tasked with the upkeep of all GlüNeuRStv regime databases monitoring player engagements and operator’s market activities.
Until GGL is established in 2023, the executive of Hesse will serve as a temporary placeholder for German sports betting licenses. Meanwhile, Saxony Anhalt will be responsible as the supervisory authority for online casino and poker licenses.
