Brightstar and Scientific Games, have secured a transformative contract in Brazil becoming the technology and management stewards for the state of São Paulo.
The duo announced this week that the government of São Paulo has commissioned the pair to run the state lottery for the next 15 years under an exclusive contract.
Terms cover lottery operations across both retail and digital channels including passive lottery games i.e. preprinted ticket number draw games.
Marco Tasso, Brightstar Chief Operating Officer, Italy and International Lottery Operations,” said: “Brightstar is very pleased to expand our operations in Brazil and partner with Scientific Games through SPL to introduce new, exciting lottery options for Sao Paulo’s 44 million residents.
“Leveraging our 40-plus years’ experience operating some of the world’s largest lotteries, this agreement enables Brightstar to deliver our best-in-class technology and engaging games to players throughout the country, while creating new, convenient opportunities through the ability to deploy our comprehensive iLottery system and offer eInstant games.”
The deal comes after the close of an active year for both Brightstar and Scientific Games, as both businesses have divested igaming units to become standalone lottery technology and managed systems suppliers.
Brightstar was formed last year following its split from following the divestment of IGT Digital and Gaming to Apollo Global Management.
The digital and gaming division, now a standalone enterprise, continues to trade as IGT. The remaining lottery divisions subsequently took on the new identity of Brightstar, symbolising its new single focus on lottery activity.
Subsequent months saw the firm sign new deals or renew existing contracts with various lottery operators, with perhaps its biggest tender being the nine-year contract to run the Italian national lottery as part of a four company consortium.
Scientific Games, meanwhile, also had an active year of partnerships. 2025 saw the firm sign deals with the New Zealand Lottery, Loto–Québec and the Ohio Lottery, among others.
“The SPL joint venture with Brightstar is the result of months of collaboration to ensure this new state lottery in Brazil met the needs of all stakeholders,” said Michael Conforti, President of International for Scientific Games.
“We are honored to have the opportunity to bring our trusted, secure systems technology and high-performance lottery games to São Paulo with the goal of helping fund healthcare in the state.”
