It appears that Christmas is early in New York State as Powerball draws keep changing the financial circumstances of many.
Despite the $1.8bn multi-state Powerball jackpot landing in Missouri and Texas last weekend, 110 winning Powerball tickets were sold to New Yorkers in the three months that the jackpot has been accumulating.
Since June, seven New Yorkers have become millionaires, bagging the second prize of $1m. Two more won the $200k prize, while five others took home $150k. Seven more players won $100k. A further 89 New Yorkers enjoyed a $50k prize each.
Not only that, but the hype generated around the lottery also proved to be a significant boost for the local economy. Between June and September, NYC Powerball ticket sales provided a total of $64.3m for public schools and generated $11m in commissions for lottery retailers.
Brian O’Dwyer, New York State Gaming Commission Chair, said: “Massive jackpots generate additional excitement, which in-turn delivers increased sales that directly benefit New York’s public schools and small businesses.
“Plus, more than 100 lucky New Yorkers won life-changing prizes during the three-month run. The New York Lottery is proud to deliver such fun, beneficial, and lucrative games for New Yorkers of legal age to enjoy.”
Throughout the years, the New York Lottery has maintained a constant commitment to funding education across the Big Apple, leveraging its status as the largest and most profitable lottery in North America.
For FY24, the lottery generated around $3.6bn through its Lottery Aid fund which then it used to support education in New York.
Partially responsible for the lottery’s successful collaboration with public education in the state is Scientific Games, which maintains a partnership with the New York Lottery going back to 1976.
