UK Sport, the government agency responsible for sports funding grants, has elected Professor Nick Webborn (CBE DL) as Chair, succeeding Dame Katherine Grainger.

An expert in sports science, Webborn brings decades of experience to the role, having served as Chief Medical Officer for Paralympics GB at the London 2012 Games and the inaugural Invictus Games in 2014.

As Chair of the British Paralympic Association (BPA), Webborn oversaw a 10-year strategic overhaul, cementing the UK’s position among the leading Paralympic nations and integrating social impact as a core component of performance goals.

UK Sport, funded primarily by the National Lottery, plays a pivotal role in the UK’s elite sporting system. It invests in Olympic and Paralympic sports, athlete development pathways, and the hosting of major international events. The agency’s investment strategy is designed to maximise medal-winning potential while also promoting sport as a force for national inspiration and unity.

Webborn takes the reins at a transformative time as UK Sport moves its body to the next phase of its 10-year strategic plan. His leadership is expected to help maintain Britain’s competitive edge on the world stage while adapting to increasing global competition and growing expectations around inclusivity and athlete welfare.

He also takes on the leadership role during Allwyn’s early years as operator of the UK National Lottery, with channeling funds to grassroots sports and other good causes, an important responsibility for the firm. The company has committed to doubling returns from £30m to £60m over the course of its 10 year licence.

Regarding his experience, Webborn was awarded an OBE in 2016 and elevated to a CBE in the 2022 New Year Honours List, both in recognition of his long-standing contributions to Paralympic sport and sports medicine.

Commenting on his appointment, Webborn said it was “a great honour” to lead UK Sport and build on the achievements of recent decades.

“I look forward to working with the incredibly talented people we have across the UK sporting system to deliver continued success on the field of play and to unite, inspire and excite people all across the nation,” he said.

Welcoming the appointment, Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport, Lisa Nandy, added: “I am delighted to welcome Professor Nick Webborn as the new Chair of UK Sport. His expertise in sports medicine and sports administration will bring invaluable perspective to this role.

“Nick’s leadership will be crucial as UK Sport continues its efforts to grow Olympic and Paralympic sports, while continuing work with government to cement the UK’s position as a world-leading host of prestigious competitions that leave lasting legacies in communities across the country.”
