Residents of the province of Buenos Aires are now able to pay through QR codes when playing with lottery, equestrian and bingo providers.

The guidelines were officially published in the Buenos Aires Official Gazette by the province’s lottery and gambling regulator, the Provincial Institute of Lotteries and Casinos (IPLyC).

The new QR codes will roll out into physical venues, facilitating payments by being linked to a debit card or a player account.

As reported by SBC Noticias, the rules will allow for the “better control of the digital traceability of money, and at the same time make it easier for the bettor to have a means of payment of frequent and regular use, avoiding the risk involved in having cash.”

Another positive impact that the regulator expects to see from the implementation of the QR codes includes more efficient control over the use of debit cards linked to social welfare programmes, hence reinforcing the battle against problem gambling.

“This measure will allow us to exercise more effective control in order to contribute to the prevention of gambling addiction, tending to the generation of greater limitations that contribute to the fight against compulsive gambling,” IPLyC commented.

The QR codes were backed by the National Office for the Prevention of Money Laundering and Financing of Terrorism, the Provincial Directorate of Games and Exploitation, as well as the Provincial Directorate of Administration and Finance.
