The UK Gambling Commission (UKGC) has confirmed that Marcus Boyle will step down as Chair on January 31, 2025, after completing his three-year term.
Appointed in August 2021 by the Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS), Boyle succeeded Bill Moyes, who resigned following regulatory failures linked to the Football Index investigation.
Boyle’s tenure saw him lead the Commission through pivotal projects, including the fourth National Lottery licence competition and the Gambling Act Review.
Under his leadership, the Commission published a three-year strategy in April 2024, focusing on transparency and data use. This strategy positions the Commission on a clear path forward. Boyle also supported CEO Andrew Rhodes’ push for stricter compliance measures, resulting in record fines and penalties for UK-licensed operators.
As his term ends, the UKGC and DCMS are finalizing key decisions, including RET Levy funding allocations and new £5 and £2 stake limits for online slots to curb high-risk gambling.
The Commission’s Board and colleagues have praised Boyle for his leadership and contributions, thanking him for his service. Minister for Gambling, Baroness Twycross, commented:”The past three years have been very significant for the Commission, as it takes forward measures set out in the Gambling Act Review and begins the process of the fourth National Lottery licence.
I am grateful for Marcus’s hard work and commitment to the Gambling Commission and public service during his tenure, and I wish him the best for his future endeavours.”
