UK Gambling backs high ambitions of SGWeek 2024

The UK Gambling industry is ramping up its responsible betting efforts both online and in land-based venues as Safer Gambling Week kicks off for its eighth consecutive year. Running from November 18–24, the initiative is organized by the Betting and Gaming Council (BGC), the Bingo Association, and BACTA, with support from the UK Gambling Commission (UKGC).

Government Support for Safer Gambling Week

Baroness Twycross, Minister for Gambling, highlighted the importance of the initiative:
“Safer Gambling Week showcases the vital work being done to protect individuals at risk of gambling harm. This week emphasizes the tools and support available to prevent life-changing consequences. The Government is actively reviewing gambling policy and will provide updates soon.”

Shadow Sport and Gambling Minister Louie French MP also praised the campaign:
“This marks the eighth Safer Gambling Week. Over the years, the UK has made substantial progress in addressing problem gambling. Compared to other European countries, we have a relatively low problem gambling rate, thanks to the efforts of BGC, BACTA, and the Bingo Association, alongside previous government actions.

“With over 50 million social media impressions last year, Safer Gambling Week is an effective platform to spread the message to the 22.5 million adults who enjoy gambling monthly. The BGC, BACTA, and the Bingo Association should take pride in their role in promoting responsible gambling year-round.”

Andrew Rhodes, Chief Executive of the UKGC, underscored the campaign’s significance:
“Safety should always be at the core of gambling. Safer Gambling Week provides an opportunity to amplify this focus and share best practices across the industry, helping make gambling in Britain among the safest in the world.”

Grainne Hurst, BGC Chief Executive, emphasized the impact of the initiative:
“Safer Gambling Week showcases the tools available year-round to help ensure millions of people can enjoy gambling safely. Past campaigns have significantly boosted the use of tools like deposit limits and time-outs, with 54% of those setting deposit limits during the campaign doing so for the first time.”

Results and Milestones

Last year’s Safer Gambling Week saw record-breaking engagement. Social media impressions surpassed 50 million, and the number of players using reality check tools rose by 300% for the second consecutive year. The campaign also led to a surge in customers adopting safer gambling measures, such as deposit limits.

George McGregor, BACTA’s Executive Director, reflected on the initiative:
“This week is a prime opportunity to highlight the ongoing commitment of the gambling sector to ensuring customers can have fun while knowing operators are there to help if needed.”

Safer Gambling Week continues to be a cornerstone in promoting responsible gambling, fostering a safer environment for the millions who enjoy it responsibly.
