The Powerball Jackpot will arrive in the UK this month in a flagship move which marks the first time that the draw is available outside of the US.
The draw will make its debut on these shores on 21 July, with tickets available for £4.
If the Powerball jackpot, which is currently estimated at $416m (£311m), rolls over until the UK launch, UK players will be in with a chance to win a substantial amount in the opening draw on 23 July.
Tickets will be available through the National Lottery operator Allwyn UK’s retail network, website and app.
Allwyn CEO, Andria Vidler, said: “We’re excited to give National Lottery players the chance to dream bigger, while supporting thousands of Good Cause projects across the UK every week.
“Powerball jackpots can soar into the billions, offering breath-taking sums with the potential to transform lives and communities.
“As we begin the countdown to the first draw later this month, you won’t be able to miss Powerball’s arrival with a major launch lined up. We’re encouraging players to get involved when tickets go on sale, and we’ll be crossing our fingers for our first UK winner.”
Powerball to boost good causes returns
The move is the latest in Allwyn’s aim to modernise the National Lottery to benefit good cause projects, which it is aiming to doubling returns to – from £30m to £60m – by the end of its 10 year tenure as licence holder.
This will go some way to doing so, with the Powerball game estimated to generate £1bn for UK good causes during its first five years.
Powerball will be introduced to UK players via a partnership with the Multi-State Lottery Association (MUSL), allowing them to compete for the same jackpot as players in 48 states.
Jackpots will start at £12m and are uncapped, meaning prizes can grow into the hundreds of millions and, in exceptional circumstances, exceed $1bn – something which has happened seven times since the game’s inception in 1988.
UK jackpot winners will receive the top prize across a timeframe of 30 years, in line with the game’s US annuity structure.
Players are to select five main numbers between 1-69 and a Powerball number from 1-26, with draws taking place every Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday.
Matching two main numbers will land UK players an £8 prize, while matching all five will return a guaranteed £1m.
Rebecca Paul, President and CEO of the Tennessee Lottery and former President of the World Lottery Association, added: “This next step brings us closer to a thrilling milestone for Powerball.
“More players means faster-growing jackpots, more excitement and even greater impact for the communities we serve.”
