European Lotteries (EL) has released a new sustainability report, further underpinning its continuous commitment to improving societies.
The paper includes 2023 financial monitoring data from all EL members, with a total of €22b going to good causes and societal initiatives, such as sport, health, education and cultural heritage projects.
Romana Girandon, EL President, commented: “With over 50 percent of Gross Gaming Revenue (GGR) reinvested into society, European lotteries remain steadfast in their mission: creating a positive societal impact while ensuring responsible gaming practices.
“Once again, EL and its Members have put public benefit first, upholding their long-standing commitment to society.”
EL was also quick to point out the positive impact it leaves on employment, with 49.5k people staffed at various levels across European EL members – and 54k overall.

Sector growth was also highlighted, with draw-based games (DBG) representing the biggest game segment in 2023, followed closely by instant games. Contributing to the sector’s continuous boom was also the Sports Betting segment, marked by an increasingly hospitable environment across Europe.
Lastly, online purchasing is seemingly enjoying an uptick in popularity thanks to rising digitisation, mobile device penetration and demand rates, but retail remains the king in sales.
