The Romania Lottery is undertaking a research project regarding the potential launch of remote casino games in a bid to diversify its product portfolio.

As reported by local outlet Stiripesurse, the lottery is developing plans to implement online slot machines, roulette, poker, blackjack, bingo, keno, and baccarat games in a bid to seek further growth opportunities.

Considering the backdrop of the pandemic, when most retail shops and brick-and-mortar casinos were forced to close, Romania, like much of the world, has experienced online gambling sales increases, encouraging the lottery to potentially expand.

Last month, it was reported that the lottery was reviewing whether to expand the product portfolio of the national lottery to include a fixed-odds and online sportsbook offering.

The operator issued notice to The European Lotteries (EL) and World Lottery Association (WLA), informing the bodies that it requires guidance on developing an ‘organised framework to cater for an organic consumer demand in sports betting.’

“This type of game is addressed to a certain segment of players that is not covered through the current product portfolio of the Romanian Lottery. Extending the portfolio also by introducing remote gambling represents an opportunity for growth and implicitly a revenues’ maximising,” the lottery published in a statement.

“This is a new way which the Romanian Lottery identified in order to contribute to the main purpose of the State Lottery, that of supporting the financing of public national interest objectives.”
