The California State Lottery has issued a caution to its players not to use lottery ticket delivery systems, labelling them ‘unregulated’ and potentially dangerous.

Addressing its players, the lottery warned that online ticket ordering systems are unregulated, not approved or properly vetted, adding that they should not be operating in California.

The lottery added that because it has no relationship with the sellers, players could be left vulnerable to them.

It stated that because it has ‘no oversight authority or contractual relationship with these entities, it cannot ensure the safety, security, and integrity of these services.’

Furthermore, California Lottery is placing emphasis on education about third-party courier services, working with its 23,000 retailers to raise awareness about the risks and potential ramifications of working with unregulated and unapproved delivery services.

“It’s come to our attention that some of our retail partners have been working with lottery courier businesses and that they, along with California Lottery players, may not even know the potential vulnerabilities they could be exposed to,” said Alva V. Johnson, Director of the California State Lottery.

“The California Lottery is not affiliated with any third-party ticket delivery services. Players who choose to engage with them do so at their own risk.”
