The online lottery operator Lottoland has pledged its commitment to the environment by becoming carbon neutral and signing Amazon’s initiative, The Climate Pledge, becoming the first gambling operator to sign the pledge.

In association with Tunley Engineering, the operator has measured, tested and offset its carbon emissions in order to fulfil its goal.

Tunley Engineering, a global climate reduction consultancy, conducted a carbon assessment of Lottoland’s operations to ‘comprehend and visualise’ its carbon footprint in terms of annual tonnes of carbon equivalence. As a result, the lottery operator had the data to make more informed decisions to contribute ‘tangible reductions to their carbon footprint.’

Following a range of extensive assessments and the carbon reduction in accordance with ISO 14064, Lottoland has signed The Climate Pledge, an initiative led by Amazon and signed by over 200 businesses aimed at reducing carbon emissions in global commerce.

“We’re excited to continue to welcome companies to The Climate Pledge,” said Sally Fouts, global lead at Amazon for The Climate Pledge.

“Businesses have played a role in contributing to climate change, but deep cuts in emissions of greenhouse gases can stabilize increasing temperatures. This is why urgent, collaborative action by companies around the world is needed.

“Pledge signatories are uniquely positioned to rise to the challenge of addressing climate change and helping to create the low-carbon economy of the future. I look forward to seeing all we can accomplish over the next two decades, together.”

The Carbon Pledge aims to reduce carbon emissions to a net-zero position before 2040 or sooner. Lottoland has become the first gambling operator to sign the pledge and achieve carbon neutrality.

Lottoland CEO Nigel Birrell added: “We are thrilled to have achieved carbon neutral status and to have signed the Climate Pledge. At Lottoland we are committed to being socially and environmentally responsible not just for our customers but for our employees too. We are proud to be taking a leadership position in climate change.”
