Maryland Governor Larry Hogan has named John A Martin as the new Director of the Maryland Lottery and Gaming Control Agency, with immediate effect.

Currently the agency’s Managing Director and Chief Revenue Officer, Martin will succeed Gordon Medenica in the role of Director, who announced his retirement in April.

Hogan commented: “Maryland is proud to have one of the best lottery and gaming systems in the country, and with sports betting coming online, we are poised for even more record growth.

“John Martin has done an outstanding job in his role overseeing the agency, and we are fortunate to have him as our new director. I want to sincerely thank Gordon Medenica for his service to Maryland, particularly for the pivotal role he played in establishing our very successful vaccine lottery.”

Martin has served as the lottery’s Managing Director and Chief Revenue Officer since 2015, overseeing the $2.5bn state agency and its 4,400 retailers, as well as managing the top line revenue for traditional lottery products.

Before he was Managing Director, he was the Assistant Director for four years with oversight of Sales, Creative Services, Product Development, and Communications. Before moving to Maryland in 2009, he was the Ohio Lottery’s Deputy Director of the Office of Sales Management.

Governor Hogan also named two members to the state’s Sports Wagering Application Review Commission in Bert Hash Jr and Thomas M Brandt Jr, who will serve as the Chair of the commission.
