The Lotería Nacional from Mexico has unveiled a plan to update its processes in order to improve its computer systems. The decision stems from a cyber attack that happened last week, in which data from the institution was stolen and leaked.

Different cybersecurity specialists shared that the hacking group Avadon was in charge of the attack and that it managed to publish 10 internal documents. The group also assured that more sensitive documents, such as contracts, payment information and more, will be published if the payment of a ransom is not made within 10 days.

“In accordance with the strengthening of the control mechanisms and as part of the updating process of the institution’s computer systems, we’ve implemented a renovation plan. This generated some issues in the administrative services and operational areas of the Lotería Nacional,” said the institution.

On the other hand, the national lottery assured that the technological support area of all draws and contests “is operating normally.”

The Lotería added: “[People can check] prizes, results and general information of draws and contests through our information channels and our social networks. We detected that information was stolen in the administrative area by criminals operating internationally.

“After finding out about the situation, we took the necessary measures to take control, we gave notice to the Cyber Police and we have the constant support of the Coordination of National Digital Strategy (CEDN) of the Presidency of the Republic, in addition to the direct support of experts in the field.”
