China Welfare and Sports Lotteries reach ¥84bn in Q1 2021

China’s Welfare and Sports Lotteries has declared it achieved ¥84.52bn (circa $13.07bn) in ticket sales for the first quarter of 2021, according to data from the Ministry of Finance.

The Ministry of Finance noted that the Welfare Lottery’s ticket sales in Q1 totalled ¥34bn in the period, while ticket sales of the Sports Lottery came in at ¥50.53bn.

Lottery sales in March came in at ¥29.81bn, with sales in the provinces of Guangdong, Zhejiang, Shandong, Jiangsu and Henan being relatively high.

Under China’s lottery management rules, money from ticket sales is used for administrative expenses, public welfare projects and prize winnings.

Back in January, China’s Welfare and Sports Lotteries announced total revenues of ¥35.75bn (circa $5.53bn) for the month, an increase of 31.4% from the same period last year according to data from the Ministry of Finance.

The Welfare Lottery’s ticket sales grew 18% year on year to ¥15.21bn, while the Sports Lottery’s sales surged by 43.5% compared to January 2020’s numbers to ¥20.54bn.
