Colombia’s Lotería del Valle considering online distribution

Rubén Felipe Lagarejo, manager of the Beneficencia del Valle, has confirmed the organisation has unveiled a budget proposal to the Departmental Assembly which includes the possibility of an online distribution channel for the local lottery.

Lotteries in Colombia are looking for new ways to generate income during a period where activity is almost nil. The goal is to seek new distribution channels to be able to generate revenue and mitigate the consequences of COVID-19 on local operations.

According to Diario Occidente, the manager said that the budget was adjusted after the start of the quarantine. The original projection was $15m, but the authorities now estimate that the lottery will generate around $8m during this fiscal year.

“Our biggest challenge in this four-year period is to set an online distribution and sales channel, because we are aiming to attract new people, like the young population,” added Lagarejo.

In addition, the manager said that they will be proactive and hope that, with the support of Governor Clara Luz Roldán, they’ll be able to continue generating resources for the public health.

In late April, the Colombian President signed Decree 593, which established the reactivation of ‘operations of games of luck and games of chance’, such as lotteries.

“Some lottery services will reopen, mostly because of the resources we obtain from these activities. They are safe and they’re important for the health sector.”
