Karas unveiled as interim OPAP CEO

Following its recent announcement regarding the departure of CEO and Board of Directors member, Damian Cope, Greek gaming operator OPAP has unveiled chief commercial officer Jan Karas as company’s acting CEO.

While Cope announced his decision to step down as CEO of the group in April, he will remain in an advisory role to the board where he is set to work with Sazka Group on international development.

Regarding his replacement, Karas will now assume responsibilities as of June 1 until a permanent CEO is appointed. He is set to take over all of Cope’s responsibilities within the company with the exception of human resources duties, which will be carried out by deputy CEO, Odysseas Christoforou.

In his new role, Karas and his deputy Christoforou will now report to Executive Chairman Kamil Ziegler who will continue with the executive responsibilities that were previously assigned to him.

Ziegler commented: “After four years as OPAP’s Chief Executive Officer and Board Director, Damian is leaving OPAP. Personally, and on behalf of OPAP’s Board of Directors, I would like to thank him for his significant contribution to OPAP’s progress and results and wish him all the best for the future.

“Jan Karas is assuming responsibilities of the CEO and I am looking forward to working with him.  Moreover, Deputy CEO, Odysseas Christoforou takes on additional responsibilities and will be reporting directly to me. I am convinced that we will achieve our strategic goals and address the challenges arising after the COVID-19 pandemic, leveraging the opportunities to deliver value to our shareholders and stakeholders”.

Taking over from Cope who became OPAP’s CEO in June 2016, Karas has garnered experience in various roles within the Greek organisation such as his time as its Chief Sales Officer having been appointed in January 2014, and his time as CCO which he achieved in January of this year.

With the Greek Government easing lockdown restrictions, OPAP resumed retail operations with strict social distancing measures in place, beginning the reopening of its 3,750 stores on 11 May.
