The Malta Gaming Authority (MGA) and the UK Gambling Commission (UKGC) have strengthened their partnership by signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to boost consumer protection and create a safer gambling environment.
The MoU focuses on enhancing the exchange of crucial information and intelligence between the two regulatory bodies. Together, they aim to protect consumers, prevent criminal activities, and shield vulnerable players from gambling-related harms.
Recognising the global nature of the gambling industry, both regulators highlight the need for cross-border collaboration. By combining their resources and sharing best practices, the MGA and UKGC intend to reinforce their regulatory frameworks and address shared challenges more effectively.
Andrew Rhodes, CEO of the UKGC, expressed enthusiasm about the agreement, stating, “This agreement signifies our ongoing collaboration with the MGA. We have been working closely for some time, and after our productive visit this summer, it’s only right to formalise our relationship.”
Rhodes also spoke about the potential benefits of this partnership. “We’re eager to continue raising standards across the industry, addressing shared challenges like illegal gambling, and exploring future initiatives, including shadowing programs and key issues in areas like AML (anti-money laundering) and sports betting integrity.”
Regulatory Mandates and Missions
The UK Gambling Commission regulates most forms of gambling in Great Britain, including the National Lottery. It operates under the Gambling Act 2005, ensuring individuals and businesses involved in gambling comply with regulations to make the industry safer and fairer.
Charles Mizzi, CEO of the MGA, echoed this sentiment, underscoring the value of formal cooperation. “Our longstanding informal collaboration with the UKGC has already yielded significant results, and formalizing this partnership marks a positive step forward. This collaboration aligns with our regulatory goals, allowing us to tackle common challenges more effectively and continuously enhance the efficiency of our processes and framework,” he said
The Malta Gaming Authority regulates various gaming industry sectors to promote fairness and transparency while preventing crime and protecting minors and vulnerable players. As Malta’s primary gaming regulatory body, the MGA implements best practices, effectively regulating a growing gaming sector while supporting sustainable development. Its robust regulatory environment and technical expertise have attracted numerous operators, positioning it as a global leader in remote gaming regulation.
