Spelinspektionen, Sweden’s Gambling Inspectorate, is set to undertake a ‘testing phase’ of its centralised self-exclusion programme, Spelpaus, throughout May.

The testing period is required as Spelinspektionen has procured a new systems supplier to operate Spelpaus.se, charged with delivering comprehensive upgrades.

At the start of the year, Spelinspektionen alerted Swedish licensed operators that it would launch a new ‘Spelpaus 2.0 system’, aiming to make Swedish self-exclusion more seamless for players and to better inform relevant health authorities with more data on consumer engagements across gambling verticals.

The Spelpaus self-exclusion system was launched at the start of 2019, coinciding with the government’s relaunch of Sweden’s new online gambling marketplace.

Applied as a statutory order by Spelinspektionen, all Swedish licensed operators must remain connected to the Spelpaus database, which to date has registered over 73,000 self-excluded players.

At the beginning of May, Spelinspektionen will inform operators on how to connect with Spelpaus new system to ‘run connection tests’.

This will be followed by a live testing phase from May 9 – May 13, in which licensed operators will be allowed to trial customer self-exclusion tests on the new system.

Following the testing phase, Spelinspektionen will disclose full information with regards to Spelpaus’ commissioning and integration.

The update sees Spelinspektionen maintain its 2022 regulatory schedule, as the inspectorate seeks to fully operate its Spelpaus 2.0 system by the end of May.

“The purpose of the update is, among other things, to make Spelpaus.se more user-friendly. Information and guidance on how to get help with gambling problems will be clearer on the new gaming break website,” a Spelinspektionen statement read.

“Another novelty, which many have requested, is the possibility of being able to extend an ongoing suspension.”
