The Maryland Lottery and Gaming Control has awarded two more sports betting licences for retail sportsbooks to operate in the state as it gears towards an official launch.

As reported by Gaming Today, Riverboat on the Potomac and Long Shot’s in Frederick have been awarded retail sports betting licences, joining Hollywood Casino Perryville (Barstool), Ocean Downs (TwinSpires), and Horseshoe Casino (Caesars) to operate in the Old Line State.

Both new licensees are minority and/or women controlled businesses, highlighting MLGC’s commitment to diversity and inclusion.

Alyse Cohen, the owner of Long Shot’s, commented: “I am thrilled to be a trailblazer for a diverse and successful sports betting industry in the state of Maryland.

“We have exciting plans for our retail sportsbook that will make it a centrepiece to the economic and cultural vibrancy of the fastest-growing state in the country. I appreciate the staff at the Maryland Lottery for working with Long Shot’s during the rigorous licensing process.”

“We’re extremely happy to see these two locally owned businesses move forward, and we’re eager to continue working with them in the coming weeks to launch their sports wagering operations,” added Maryland Lottery and Gaming Director John Martin.

Meanwhile, the Maryland sports betting market is expected to open sooner than anticipated, with MGM National Harbour announcing its intention to open on December 9.

Additionally, Live! Casino and Hotel Maryland is expecting to launch its FanDuel sportsbook on December 10, much sooner than the originally planned schedule in January 2022.

“Everything is on pace for the first public openings to happen in December,” added Martin. “The facilities and the public are eager to get started, and so are we.”
