Puerto Rican lottery set for immediate restart

The assistant secretary of the Loterías de Puerto Rico, José López Ramos has confirmed that Lotería Electrónica draws are set to restart with immediate effect.

In addition to the lottery restart, the secretary also revealed the launch of a Lotería Electrónica app available on both Google Play and the Apple Store.

He stated: “This app allows players to scan their tickets and instantly know if they’ve won. It’s a project that we’ve been working on for some time and we understand that it’s the ideal time to provide our clients with a tool that allows them to know the results in a fast and safe way.”

The reopening follows on from Puerto Rico Governor Wanda Vázquez Garced signing Executive Order 2020-038 at the beginning of the month which states that pharmacies and gas stations will be able to operate regularly 7 days a week, at established hours. This includes lottery sales and inspection centers.

“Players will be able to buy Powerball tickets until 4:45 pm for Wednesday and Saturday draws, in addition to Kino and Instant Games cards at authorized shops. Eventually, we will conduct all draws that were suspended due to the emergency and announce when we will restart Pega 2, Pega 3, Pega 4, Loto and Revancha’s tickets sales,” said López.

Although the decree was signed in the first week of May, authorities decided not to restart operations at the time as they argued that they needed to find a way to be able to operate the lottery without risking the health of the public.

“It’s important that we can guarantee these conditions to avoid a significant increase in COVID-19 infections,” previously explained the Secretary of the Department of Economic Development and Commerce, Manuel A. Laboy Rivera.
